Where does it go in TAS?

The short answer

In Tasmania, kerbside lids are red (general), yellow (recycling) and lime (organics). E-waste goes to a drop-off point, never a kerbside bin. Drink containers earn 10c through Recycle Rewards since 1 May 2025. No soft-plastics scheme operates in TAS, so soft plastics go in the general waste bin. Household chemicals: Statewide Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

What is different in TAS?

Kerbside bins Red lid — generalYellow lid — recyclingLime lid — organics Bins vary by council in Tasmania. The lid colours follow the national Australian Standard cited by Rethink Waste Tasmania rather than a Tasmanian mandate, and more councils are still introducing kerbside food and garden organics collection, so not every household has an organics bin.
E-waste Drop-off, never kerbside Nothing electronic belongs in a kerbside bin. E-waste recycling services vary by council: televisions, computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, power supplies and cables are taken at waste transfer stations, sometimes for a small fee. Source: rethinkwaste.com.au.
Container refund Recycle Rewards · 10c Running since 1 May 2025. Most drink containers from 150ml to 3L in glass, plastic, aluminium, steel or liquid paperboard are eligible. Plain milk containers, glass wine bottles, glass spirit bottles, cordial bottles, flavoured milk and juice of 1L or more, and plastic containers under 150ml are excluded. The refund point network is still rolling out. Source: recyclerewards.com.au.
Soft plastics General waste bin No collection scheme operates in TAS as at September 2026.
Household chemicals Statewide Household Hazardous Waste Collection Free drop-off events run across three regions, South, North and North-West, with dates published per region and no booking except for the West Coast Council collection.
